A new report from Gallup-Healthways sheds light on the status of diabetes in the United States — and the news is unsettling.
The prevalence of diabetes has climbed to a new high of 11.6 percent as of 2016, the report notes. That’s up from 10.8 percent in 2008, meaning that today, 2.5 million more people in the country have diabetes than in 2008.
Those levels are even higher in the South, where diabetes affects a staggering 12.8 percent of the population. Seven of the 10 states and communities with the highest diabetes rates are in the South, with Alabama, West Virginia, Mississippi, Tennessee, South Carolina and Arkansas each having more than 14 percent of their population reporting having been diagnosed with diabetes.
The report goes even deeper into diabetes and who is likely to be affected most by the disease.
People who work in transportation, farming, service, at an office or as a business owner tend to have the highest rates of diabetes. That’s likely because people in those industries are either extremely busy or spend most of their days sitting at a desk, which notoriously leads to a higher likelihood of weight gain and obesity.
Obesity tends to be a precursor to the risk of developing diabetes. And the more people who have diabetes, the greater the health care costs and strain on the hospital systems that are already in place.
Luckily, there are ways to combat diabetes. One, is by achieving and maintaining a healthy weight through a nutritious, balanced diet. And Diet-to-Go may help do just that.* For example, the Diet-to-Go Balanced-D meal plan is specifically catered to people with pre- and Type 2 diabetes.
